How do you make music? What does that even mean? These were the first questions I had when I first thought about pursuing a career in music, and for real, there is no easy way to start!
I’m gonna walk you thru how I started! I know I’m still new/starting out, but at least we can do all this shit together lol.
In 2010, my dad went to prison on some messed up shit. Long story short, my brothers and I joined the statistic of millions of nappy-headed niggas raised without a dad. After that, my world fell apart, and so did theirs…but one thing never changed, music. It was still around, and way more influential, I convinced myself, then having a dad ever could be. Music raised me. When I had no one, I could listen to a song, and it’d all just fade out…damn I’m still like that lol. hroughout the years. So many cultures, so many individuals, all expressing themselves on one platform. It was amazing! Seeing the struggles of some of music’s most influential individuals and how they used their voice to share their experience, it was overwhelming.
After that, I knew that I had to repay music somehow for the way it had helped me, and the only way I knew how to, was to learn and contribute. I started diving into each genres history, how it came about, what influenced it the most, etc…and it all became so much clearer to me. It was a lot of shit to research, don’t get me wrong, but it was def worth it. I learned WHY music was so important to so many people, and just how much self-expression has promoted music throughout the years. So many cultures, so many individuals, all expressing themselves on one platform. It was amazing! Seeing the struggles of some of music’s most influential individuals and how they used their voice to share their experience, it was overwhelming.
In 2017, I started building my own in-home studio. It was ROUGH. I had a terrible microphone and a shitty keyboard in my dungeon-like basement, but…it was enough at the time lol. I then upgraded to moving the “studio” up to my bedroom and got a few new pieces of sound equipment. I started collecting any piece of music equipment I could: broken guitars, busted amps, dented-up mics, and honestly everything else I could find. I landed a new job and finally had the schmoney to get some new equipment, and accumulated what I needed to make it all work.
After a while, I started promoting myself and getting my artist name out there. I started talking to as many people as I could who were in the business and started performing at small gigs and bars.
In 2018, I made my first unofficial music drop on Soundcloud, a little EP that I called “Pt. 1”. It was terrible. I still have it on my youtube and Soundcloud if you want to check it out!
And later, in 2019, I released my first album to Spotify. It was the sequel to Pt. 1, and, you guessed it, it was labeled: “Pt. 2”!
Now I have built this website (where you’re reading this), completely upgraded all of my sound equipment, and working towards getting more known! So now we’re all caught up!
BTW, This was the start to the lyrics of my first “song” :
“I wonder what it's like to be a jet
To fly through the sky without a net
I wonder what it's like to be a train
To go as fast as lighting and do it again
I wonder what it's like to just be you
Go where you want and do what you do”
I couldn’t believe that I, an 8yr old, put such “profound thoughts” together, especially in song lol. Maybe I’ll remix it someday and release it.
See u all next time!
